We've been looking forward to this day for quite a while. This fall batch may only be 2 records, but man, are they insanely great. You probably know the drill by now, for the next 24 hours (until 10am CST tomorrow) we are offering free domestic shipping and discounted international shipping. That being said, we have a limited number of Limiñanas singles (like 125 of them and they won't be going on the website) so first come first served. TIM031: MIKAL CRONIN S/T LP

Conceived and recorded as a sort of therapy to help cope with adjusting to life post-college, an insuing break-up and geographic isolation Mikal Cronin steps momentarily away from the rhythm section of Orange County surf-punk bashers The Moonhearts with his debut solo LP. Fans can take heart, this isn’t a “vanity project” or half-baked endeavor - Mikal’s solo debut is fully realized, cohesive and beautiful, with themes that are as personal as they are universal; questioning your future, accepting your past and living in the moment. Taking influences such as late sixties Del Shannon and The Everly Brothers and filtering them through his own mutant California fuzz, Mikal deftly explores his singer/songwriter side that at moments feels like a punk Harry Nilsson or Curt Boettcher that balances sweet melodies & chords with chunky, psychedelic guitar freak-outs. Don’t let the opening Beach Boys-ian harmonies of “Is It Alright?” fool you into thinking this record can be easily pinned down... with long-time friend & collaborator Ty Segall producing, Eric Bauer (Ty Segall, Royal Baths) running the tape machine and guests like John Dwyer of The Oh-Sees, you can be positive you’re in for something special. Once those guitars kick in, and you hit that first transcendent chorus, you’ll be hooked and anxiously awaiting what comes next. The LP includes a download code & the first 500 copies are pressed on randomly mixed vinyl.

TIM032: LIMIÑANAS 2011 USA TOUR SINGLE
Trouble In Mind - er, we mean TIM Records is proud to present this limited vinyl single released for Perpignan, France’s Limiñanas’ 2011 Fall U.S. Tour. The A-side might be an ode/homage to yours truly called "(I've Got) Trouble In Mind", & could be this charming French combo’s catchiest tune yet! Pulsing with rhythm & some seductive lyrics (sung in French of course) that when translated seem to imply that these guys have some heavy things swirling around 'dans leur tête'! The B-side, "Je m'en vais" is the real head-turner here & marks an interesting twist in the band's sound - a frantic, almost Suicide-esque stomper with a driving beat & organ line that still sounds like The Limiñanas, but also sounds like nothing they've done before! This “tour edition” is a one-time pressing of 500 copies on black vinyl, & is brought to you by TIM Records (a division of Trouble In Mind Records, LLC).

Their idiot savant rock is wedged between Milo Aukerman's brilliant simplicity and The Spits savage brilliance. Their music celebrates all things simple, and 97% of the time, that turns out to be a good thing.

The Wax Museums write fast, sloppy punk songs about any damned thing, chronicling summer's highs and lows with Ramones-esque bravado...the members of the Wax Museums are not anywhere near as stupid as they're pretending to be.

Full of bratty numbskull humor, Eye Times features an energetic band of fellas who run through the album’s 13 tracks as if they can’t wait to tackle the next song. That doesn’t mean attitude trumps form here, though, for Wax Museums’ impatient thrash ‘n bash rhythms hold together quite well, and they are supplemented by dramatic stops, the occasional heads-down mid-tempo groover, and some unexpected production touches

This 4 song EP will melt your brain with it's mixture of druggy backbeats and blazing guitar work peppered with vocals that channel a screeching, howling Marc Bolan. They are fresh off of a slot at the 2010 Austin Psych Fest and we think you're going to be hearing a lot from these guys (as well as a rumored recording project with members of The Black Angels.) "Giggly with a post-band-practice high, the five members of Hollows roll into Ukrainian Village dive bar Stella’s late one Thursday evening. As they settle at the table with a round of icy PBRs, the group bursts into fits of laughter at the tail end of a story about underwear. “Going to practice is therapeutic,” laid-back bassist Emma Hospelhorn says. “This is corny, but I’ll turn up in a really shitty mood and come out totally happy.” Organist Maria Jenkins, a blond with a slash of shaved hair above her left ear, chips in: “We all genuinely like each other. I’ve never been in a band with this many girls, so it’s been interesting to see how the dynamic unfolds.”

Hollows formed in 2008 when Jenkins, 26, posted an ad on Craigslist. She had been gigging with local rockers Parsley Flakes but wound up with a bunch of songs that didn’t quite fit with that act’s synth-punk sound. When Hospelhorn, 29, a learning-sciences Ph.D. student and freelance flutist who also plays in New Millennium Orchestra, answered the online classified, the two hit it off. They brought on Chicago Symphony Orchestra employee and guitarist Megan Kasten, 29 (the group’s “most respectable” member, Hospelhorn says); quietly wry drummer Jason Davlantes, 22; and Hannah Harris, 26, a sprightly, curly-haired jazz vocalist and fine-art undergrad.

You might expect the sum of those parts to come out sounding something like Rush. But prog rock couldn’t be further from Hollows’ catchy, lo-fi 1960s sound. A darker version of bubbly girl groups, the quintet puts a modern spin on the beehives-and-switchblades vibe fashioned by the Shangri-Las, spiking the mix with stabs of organ and sinister lyrics about wayward loves and men whose postmortem body parts are packed in ice and shipped around the Midwest.

After gigging with Chicago garage pals like CoCoComa and the Alright Alreadies, the band hit up SXSW for the first time in March. “We ended up playing a house show immediately upon arrival at, like, 3am,” Davlantes says. Hospelhorn adds, “We didn’t even have time to stop at the place we were staying. We ended up changing our clothes and plugging in our flatirons at a Boston Market.”

Spontaneity is nothing new for the fivesome: “We’ve written lyrics in the car on the way to a show,” Hospelhorn says with a laugh. “I almost got in an accident because we were practicing them over and over.”

As Hollows gears up for its biggest gig yet—supporting actor Zooey Deschanel and indie icon M. Ward’s project, She & Him, at Pritzker Pavilion Monday 7—the gang is palpably anxious. “All of our parents are coming,” says Davlantes, who has a tattoo of a mystic pyramid on his right bicep. Jenkins, who recently graduated with an M.A. in women’s and gender studies from Roosevelt University, notes, “It’s more of a family environment. We’re not allowed to say any swear words onstage.” The band has a “no obscenity” clause in its contract and has been told it will be fined by the city if any cusses slip through the set.

“It shouldn’t be too much of an issue. We only have, like, two songs with swear words in them,” Harris says. “Jason says our songs sound like preschoolers should be dancing to them anyway.”

There are some big ideas being bandied about, something special to mark the occasion, but not all of them are practical: Hospelhorn says, “We were thinking of asking the Millennium Park Segway cops to roll back and forth while we play.” She sighs and drains the last of her beer. “But we might just have to settle on having a roller-derby sax player.”

TIM007: Tyler Jon Tyler "New England Street" b/w "Faster Than Light" We are proud to release the debut single by Chicago's own Tyler Jon Tyler. We can assure you that no other band going sounds like TJT. With a Pony that has traded his drums to play bass upside down, Tom from Daily Void's intricate drum patterns and "new comer" Rebecca's sparse guitar and thoughtful lyrics, their skeletal "less-is-more" sound brings to mind bands like The Clean, Young Marble Giants, & the Raincoats. These songs evoke a time and a place and demand your attention. (Not too mention Ian Adams' Stylophone wizardry on the B-Side)

"Everybody knows what happens when rock 'n' rollers get hitched and have kids: their bands split up, they quit going to shows, and their instruments gather dust in the basement. But Bill and Lisa Roe of CoCoComa, happily married for five years and the proud parents of five-month-old Veronica "Ronnie" Moon—named for Ronnie Spector and Keith Moon—haven't "moved to Berwyn," to borrow the Chicago scene's favorite euphemism for this process. Not only do they still live in the city, but CoCoComa has been playing out steadily since wrapping up a few months of family leave with a Memphis gig on June 20. What's more, the Roes have just launched a garage-pop label, Trouble in Mind, and plan to put out eight singles from eight bands by December. The first, CoCoComa's "Ask, Don't Tell" b/w "The Anchor," came out two weeks ago.

Both of the Roes work day jobs: Bill, 35, is production manager for Chicago Independent Distribution (formerly part of Southern), where he oversees the manufacture of CDs and LPs. Lisa, 33, is a librarian at the Chicago Public Library's Logan Square branch. But CoCoComa's second album, Things Are Not All Right, is due October 20 on Memphis label Goner Records, and they're going on a European tour in December and January—hoping their bassist's girlfriend will nanny for plane tickets. They plan to make weekend trips around the midwest as well. How will they manage all this on top of the full-time task of raising a baby?

"Precariously," says Bill, and they both laugh.

Lisa says starting a label just after Ronnie's birth was a way to make sure they didn't let music fall out of their lives. It's easy to neglect a band when you and your husband are the only two constant members. But when you're running a label, even if you don't do a thing, you'll still be hearing from artists, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.

"Our families are very supportive," Lisa adds. Her mother looks after Ronnie while the Roes are at work or playing a show—in fact, she moved to Chicago from Ohio to help. When CoCoComa plays Goner Fest in Memphis in late September, Ronnie will be coming along, and Bill's mother plans to drive the 300 miles from Chattanooga to babysit during the festival.

Music runs in both families. Bill's father turned him on to Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix at an early age, and Lisa's dad was a DJ at Kent State University who briefly managed Devo before they left Akron for Los Angeles. "Bill's biggest fear," says Lisa, "is that Ronnie won't be into music like we are."

Trouble in Mind has three singles on deck for September 22: Ottawa's White Wires, who play surfy doo-wop punk; San Francisco's Fresh & Onlys, who make psychedelic garage pop; and the Sonic Chicken 4 from Perpignan, France, who Bill describes as "the Archies on acid." In November the Roes will follow up with four more, by Albany's Cave Weddings, San Francisco's Ty Segall, Chicago's Tyler Jon Tyler, and Wheels on Fire from Athens, Ohio. Each will contain download codes, redeemable at the CID site.

"We like to start things out by going one hundred miles per hour," Lisa says. "It's a good way to show we're serious about this, and hopefully establish ourselves as a label where people will trust our taste." She describes Trouble in Mind's aesthetic as "every band's take on the two-and-a-half-minute pop song."

"We want this to be the way singles used to be," Bill says, "with one song only on each side."

Trouble in Mind singles won't have cover artwork, or rather they'll all have the same artwork: a radial blue-and-green design, "like a square record executive in the 1960s trying to do something psychedelic," says Bill. The only way to tell the releases apart is by the center labels, which change color from one to the next.

"We're trying to reduce the collectibility," Bill says. Each record comes out first in a pressing of 500 on "trash" vinyl—a swirled-together mix of colored scraps—and after that on plain black, with unlimited repressings. "We want to keep these records in print, something to enjoy instead of resell a month later."

The Roes do most of the label grunt work after Ronnie's asleep—during other people's TV time, as Bill puts it. Sometimes friends, paid in pizza and records, come over to help put records in sleeves or hand-stamp pressing numbers.

The Roes' life doesn't have a lot of wiggle room, but they're excited to be doing what they want to be doing. "It's not a chore to take care of Ronnie," says Bill, "or to put out records by bands we love."

So, I hate tapes, and I mean really hate them. It’s a stupid thing to put out in this day and age, but every now and then, someone puts out an all right tape. Nobunny did it earlier this year, and now Chicago’s Tyler Jon Tyler have done it. But we’re not going to talk about the tape; it’s really beside the point.
I’ve seen this band a few times, the first time at Spookie Dookie with the Yolks, then at the Empty Bottle with CoCoComa, and lastly at the Double Door with some bands I don’t remember as the Night Marchers showed up and we got drunk. Having seen them just about every chance I’ve had, I feel that you must know about them.
Like the aforementioned bands, Tyler Jon Tyler is part of the up-and-coming Chicago garage-pop explosion. When I saw them at Spookie Dookie, I was both drunk (1/3 a bottle of bulleit bourbon in my belly at the point, the rest of the bottle was gone by the time the Yolks finished), and totally enamored with their sound. Rebecca’s female-Lou-Reed vocals (I may or may not have yelled that at the show) are effective in the same way that Rick Froberg’s voice is effective; it also perfectly matches the sound of the band. Just listen to “Locked Out” on the band’s Myspace and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Their motto, “Pop Music for Floozies,” sums them up nicely. They might sing about Suicide Robots, but they keep things light with simple song structures and tunes that you can’t help but bob your head to.
With their current lineup, featuring all-around nice guy Tom from Daily Void, they’ve play only about 10 shows. Yet, with that handful of shows, they’ve managed to build quite a following, becoming something of a current favorite of the kids in the Chicago rock’n’roll world (making it onto the Pizza Fest lineup to boot).
There is a very simple sense of fun about the band. I feel much the same way about them as I did about the Smith Westerns last year, and look at how that turned out! Besides, Rebecca is from San Jose and was all about my old radio station, KSCU, so that’s some extra points. I’ll get around to interviewing the guys one of these days, but until then be sure to be on the lookout for them.
